Shitty Architecture Men Protest & Survey

Spring & Fall 2018

Event

Spring 2018

WiD formally and directly addressed the “Shitty Architecture Men” spreadsheet, which spurred important discussions within the GSD among faculty, staff and students. The “S.A.M.” spreadsheet is a document hosted via Google Sheets and acts as a live list of anonymously-reported allegations of misconduct, assault, and discrimination by figures in our design fields. It's about accountability across the discipline/profession. Among other activities, WiD staged a protest in Gund Hall with banners. Along with many student groups at the GSD, WiD outlined thoughts and reactions regarding the spreadsheet framed through three lenses:

1) the relevance of the spreadsheet to GSD students, the entire GSD community, and the design fields more broadly

2) a summary of actions within the GSD thus far, as we have come to see them

3) possible actions and paths forward for our community. Harvard University and the Graduate School of Design must leverage their position in the design world to lead the discussions and actions that will shape a more inclusive future for our disciplines.

Fall 2018

In response to the circulation of ‘The Shitty Architecture Men List’ and the activism in the Spring protesting the school’s response to the List, Womxn in Design conducted a survey throughout the GSD regarding reactions to the list. The content of the ‘Shitty Architecture Men Banners’ was curated from the survey responses and was viewed as an effort to ‘Keep the Conversation Going’. The banners were hung within the GSD trays during student open house week.
