CYBERFEMINIST

“Cyberfeminism has remained intentionally loose and undefined, relying on the idea of mythology to create a perception of unknown origin and multiple existences. Cyberfeminist theories consider questions of personal identity as they intersect with feminism, cybernetics, and posthuman theories and practices. Cyberfeminist approaches are interested in the non-binary, extra-human forms of identity and representation. They question the construction of positivist objectifications such as “man,” “organic” and “technology”.

The Cyberfeminism Index is a website and online catalog of references pertaining to a critical selection of cyberfeminist work. The project was commissioned by Rhizome and premiered with the New Museum’s First Look, and seeks to expand beyond Western concepts of cyberfeminism to present more broad and complex meanings.

Rooted as it is by feminism, cyberfeminism is an imperfect umbrella term. The history of feminism is dominated by Western attitudes, which makes it complicated and exclusionary. The reason I have chosen to use the term is because the combination of ‘cyber’ and ‘feminism’ allows novices to quickly connote its meaning and speaks to its lineage and evolution. This includes branches like Cyberfeminism 2.0 (335), black cyberfeminism (425), xenofeminism (563), post-cyber feminism (511), glitch feminism (363), Afrofuturism (18), and hackfeministas (582), transhackfeminism [page "Becoming machine-witch-plant Gynaecological TransHackFeminism and joyful dystopia" not found], 넷페미 (netfemi) (487), 女权之声 (feminist voices) (587), among others.
