SPIRITUALITY
“Spirituality theory asks questions about why we conduct ourselves in the way that we do and how our relationship to space shape and are shaped by our beliefs. The disciplines of design are often considered secular, but the texts in this subject question that assumption and re-engage spirituality with questions of systems and forms.”

GoodLands Inc. Catholic Geohub. 2019. [ online data library ]
Started in 2015 by designer Molly Burhans, the GoodLands nonprofit identifies regenerative land-use strategies through the mapping of religious community landholdings around the world. Working between land use planning, critical cartography, and data systems, GoodLands combines community engagement methods with planning efforts to better identify and organize Catholic Church land use potential for increased environmental, social, and economic impact. The Catholic GeoHub is a repository of publicly accessible geospatial data that maps Catholic Church properties in the context of sectors such as humanitarian aid, education, food security, biodiversity, water quality, housing, and economic development.
“A fundamental way to address many of the issues we confront as a society today is to use the land and properties we already have more thoughtfully. GoodLands provides the information, insights, and implementation tools for the Catholic Church to leverage its landholdings to address pressing issues, from environmental destruction to mass human migration…Through our partners at the Cadasta Foundation we can help your community to manage land use and rights as well as to work towards government recognition of land claims. This documented evidence of rights can be helpful for securing land rights, collateralizing assets, helping people receive formal documentation, all while providing the foundational information for informed property management and planning.”
